How to search
- Go to the Ohio Secretary of State's business search at businesssearch.ohiosos.gov.
- Search by the business name, trying the shortest distinctive word, or by entity number if you have it.
- Open the record that matches. Check the status, formation date, and location.
- Look for the agent's name and address. Filing images linked to the record show the original documents.
What you will see
- Entity name, number, type, and status.
- Agent name and address.
- Filing history, with images of many documents.
What you will not always see
Ohio records generally don't list LLC owners. Some old records may be incomplete. When the record conflicts with what you were told, get a copy of the actual filing.
Why you may be checking
- Your own company: confirm that the agent and address are current. Do it twice a year.
- Serving someone: the agent's address is where to direct process, and your lawyer can confirm the method.
- Buying or lending: a canceled status or a stale agent is a warning sign.
- Vetting a vendor: see if the company exists and is active.
If the search shows the wrong agent
That's an easy fix if the business is active. Change it with Form 521. If you see "canceled," read this first.
Questions
Can I see who owns an LLC this way?
Usually not. Ohio articles don't require listing the members. An organizer or authorized representative may appear on the filing, but that person isn't necessarily an owner.
Will the state mail me a copy of a record?
Yes, for a fee. Certified copies and certificates of good standing are available through the Secretary of State.
